Why Transition?

Citizens around the world are concerned about the problems of economic crisis, peak oil (oil that is becoming more expensive, harder-to-find, riskier and more environmentally damaging), environmental degradation and climate change.  We are joining together to build more resilient and sustainable, local, economies and communities.

The Transition Movement

Facing these challenges creates an opportunity to build a better way of life:  more connected, fulfilling, and abundant - even as we must use less energy and less resources.  We believe that a transition is inevitable, and we are working together in our communities to create the future we want to live in.

The Transition movement is based on the realizations that:
    • The economic crisis, peak oil, and climate change are related, and require urgent action
    • Adaptation to a world with less oil is inevitable
    • It is better to plan and be prepared, than be taken by surprise
    • Industrial society has lost the resilience to be able to cope with shocks to its systems
    • We have to act together and we have to act now
    • Unleashing the collective creative genius within our local communities will lead to a more abundant, connected and healthier future for all
The Transition movement believes we must use holistic thinking, system re-design, and re-localization to build more sustainable, more resilient, and healthier communities... and best of all, have fun doing it!
  • Report from the United States Miliary Joint Forces

In 2010, the U.S. military released the Joint Operating Report, an analysis of the Top 10 Trends most likely to affect national security.  Included were energy/peak oil, climate change, and the economic crisis.

    Less affordable oil

In the past few years, more countries and institutions have become concerned about the affordability and availablity of oil, which is the lifeblood of our energy-intensive economy, agriculture, and lifestyle.

Here are some of the major reports on the problem of peak oil:

2010 Joint Operating Environment Report from the U.S. Military Joint Forces

The U.S. military states that: "By 2012, surplus oil production could entirely disappear, and by 2015, the shortfall in output could reach 10 MBD."

2010 Lloyd's of London (insurance giant) report on "Sustainable Energy Security"

2010 Oxford University report "Status of Conventional Oil Reserves"

2007 U.S. Government Accountability Office Report on Peak Oil Strategy

    Damaged Environment & Climate Change

Climate change is one of many ways humans have changed our environment, but it deserves special consideration since it is likely to have far-reaching, and damaging, consequences.

In the 2010 Joint Operating Environment Report from the U.S. Military Joint Forces, the U.S. military reports that "The impact of climate change, specifically global warming and its potential to cause natural disasters and other harmful phenomena such as rising sea levels, has become a concern.... climate change is included as one of the top ten trends most likely to affect the Joint Force."

Many Christians believe they have a special responsibility to care for God's creation, including the Earth.  Read Pastor Andrew Farley and Katherine Hayhoe's scripturally-based book A Climate for Change for more information on the role that the Christian faith can play in guiding our opinions on this important global issue.

Arguments against climate change can sound convincing... but are they based in science?  Check out Skeptical Science to investigate the Top 10 arguments against climate change!
